CodeWorx is a premier firm of building code and zoning consultants, ensuring complex construction projects satisfy municipal safety regulations, zoning codes, and credentials verification.
To address the inefficiencies of verification at high-profile construction sites, we designed a dedicated iOS mobile application that streamlined on-site worker safety audits and credential scanning.
The Challenge
Previously, safety managers and zoning compliance officers at CodeWorx verified site workers using physical, multi-page paper logs and manual certificate inspections.
Across massive construction sites containing hundreds of contractors, this slow process resulted in significant delays, administrative overhead, and human errors. Missing or expired safety certifications posed massive compliance risks, threatening projects with severe municipal fines or operational shutdowns.
Design Approach
The project began with on-site research, shadowing safety compliance officers on construction jobs in New York City. We observed that:
- Compliance officers work in loud, outdoor environments with bright sunlight, necessitating high-contrast UI screens and bold typographic weights.
- Officers frequently wear gloves, demanding large, accessible tap targets and robust gestural UI shortcuts.
- Network connectivity can be unstable on underground structures, which requires offline capabilities and instant local visual indicators.
Key Features & UI Solutions
The resulting iOS app centered around high-performance utility:
- Instant iOS ID Scanning: Integrated native camera-based QR and barcode scanning, enabling inspectors to scan worker ID badges in under a second.
- Local Safety Status Badges: Styled immediate green/yellow/red compliance status overlays, providing distinct, colorblind-friendly visual indicators.
- Active Expiration Alerts: Formulated push-alerts notifying site managers when a critical worker's zoning or safety permit was within 30 days of expiration.
- Real-Time Synchronization: Engineered localized caching so scanned data synced automatically to the cloud once a reliable network connection was re-established.
